Wasps

There are many different species of wasps but here in Texas the most common are the paper wasp, mud dauber wasp, and the yellow jacket wasp.

Paper Wasp

These wasps are typically 1 inch in length and can vary in coloration from reddish-orange to dark brown, and can have yellow markings on their body. Nests are constructed from chewed wood fiber, are umbrella shaped, hang from a single filament, and have one tier of hexagon-shaped cells.  If allowed to persist, a nest will grow on average to a diameter of 6 to 8 inches and can contain several dozen wasps.  Paper wasp nests are typically found under eaves, but can also be found in garages, sheds, barns, shrubbery, or any protected area. Paper wasps are aggressive and will sting if provoked.

Mud Dauber Wasp

These wasps are typically 3/4 - 1 inch in length and can vary in coloration from entirely black to black with yellow markings to a blue black color. Mud daubers are solitary insects, meaning each nest only has one wasp that is responsible for all the necessary tasks. Most distinguishable characteristic of a mud wasp is the long, narrow “waist” (also called a petiole) that connects the thorax to the abdomen. These wasps are not very aggressive and will seldomly sting.

Yellow Jacket Wasp

These wasps are the most aggressive out of the bunch and have much larger colonies. They are smaller reaching about 1/2 an inch in length. All yellow jacket species have black and yellow markings with variations of patterns. Yellow jackets are usually ground-nesters looking to establish colonies under patios, in cracks, wall voids and other structures that have a void. If you have yellow jackets on your property we strongly suggest using a professional to take care of them.

Bees

Bumblebee

Bumblebees are important pollinators across the United States and Texas lays claim to 9 different species.  It’s fairly easy to identify a bumblebee on the fly since they are such large insects.  Their bodies are very hairy and have black and yellow colorations, though the patterns can be different between species.

Carpenter Bee

Carpenter bees are large pollinators (approximately ¾ to 1 inch in length) that are often mistaken for bumblebees and vice versa.  One distinguishing characteristic is that carpenter bees have a shiny black abdomen that has few hairs.  On the other hand, their thorax is very hairy and can have yellow, orange, or white coloration depending on the species.  You may even come across some species of carpenter bees that are smaller and have a shiny, metallic blue-black or green and purple coloration.
