Bed Bugs

Even though bedbugs do not carry diseases and their bites do not hurt, no one wants to see one in their home. Bed bugs don’t have an affinity for unsanitary conditions. They just need a place to hide and a ready food source: humans. That means bed bugs can exist anywhere there are humans (preferred) or other mammals to feed on. Bed bugs could come home with you after vacation by hiding in your luggage, cling to your clothes after a trip on the subway. They also like to hide in soft furniture, making second-hand sofas or chairs common culprits for bed bug infestations.

Bed bugs have small, flat, wingless, oval-shaped bodies which helps them hide in areas such as floor cracks, carpets, beds and upholstered furniture. Adults are brown in color, although their bodies redden after feeding. Full-grown bed bugs move relatively slowly and measure between 4 to 5 mm.

A bed bug's life begins with an egg, grain like and milky white in color. Female bed bugs lay between one and five eggs each day and may lie up to 500 eggs within one lifetime. Eggs are laid singly or in clusters and are placed within tight cracks or crevices. The egg is approximately 1 mm in length and is comparable in size to two grains of salt. Within two weeks, eggs hatch and immature bed bugs begin immediately to feed. These young bed bugs, or nymphs, pass through five molts before reaching maturity.

Although nymphs appear similar to adults, they are smaller in size and are not yet sexually mature. Young nymphs are also yellow-white in color, while older nymphs and adults are reddish-brown. In order to complete a molting stage, each nymph requires a blood meal. At room temperature, nymphs molt and become adults within five weeks.

Getting rid of Bed Bugs

Bed bugs are one of the hardest pests to treat since you need to reach total eradication. Treatments should be done by a license professionals who have experience with treating bed bugs. How Can I Prevent Bed Bugs

It is always nice to know what you can do to help prevent bed bugs. Here are just a few.

  • When buying used furniture do a thorough inspection while it is outside.

  • After traveling do a thorough inspection of your personal belongings before bringing them into your home.

  • When staying at a hotel inspect in the most common places to find bed bugs which are underneath the mattress, bed frame, headboard and furniture. Typically, they come out at night to feed, but during the day they are most likely found within a 1.5 meter radius of the bed.

  • If you suspect you might have come in proximity to bed bugs once you get home take your clothes off immediately and put them through a hot wash and hot cycle in the dryer. Do not load additional clothing.

  • When staying at a hotel keep luggage elevated or away from the bed.

  • Vacuum regularly .
