Other Common Pests
Since there are many different kinds of pests found here in Texas we will just focus on a few of the most common pests that invade our homes.
Silverfish
There are many different species of wasps but here in Texas the most common are the paper wasp, mud dauber wasp, and the yellow jacket wasp.
Paper Wasp
Silverfish prefer to live in dark, warm and moist places. Silverfish thrive when and where the humidity is high. It is common to find silverfish in garages, basements, kitchens, laundry rooms, cabinets, and crawl spaces. Silverfish aren’t poisonous and are not known to bite. Furthermore, silverfish aren’t known to carry or transfer disease. Many times a homeowner will bring silverfish into his or her own home without even knowing it. Silverfish can be introduced to your home via cardboard boxes and containers that were stored in an infested area.
Earwigs
Earwigs prefer to live in damp, dark places that go undisturbed. Preferably they live outside, but can become an issue if they start seeking shelter inside your home. They feed on decaying organic matter and vegetation and on other smaller insects. Earwigs typically enter a home in order to find food or escape poor weather through unsealed cracks or small openings.
Millipedes
Millipedes live on the ground in areas with lots of moisture. Wet plant matter, especially decaying vegetation and mulch, is a millipede’s ideal living condition. With the right conditions, millipede infestations can grow quickly. They will enter homes in search of food and shelter through unsealed cracks or small openings. Millipedes are not dangerous but can release a unpleasant-smelling liquid as a means of defense.
Ground Beetle
There are many different species of ground beetles ranging in size of 12-28 mm. The most common species (shown to the left), is a nondescript black color, but other species have more of a metallic sheen color. The best techniques to help prevent problems include habitat reduction and sealing entryways to help keep ground beetles from gaining access to the interior of homes or buildings.
Centipedes
Centipedes are elongated, with flat, segmented bodies that contain a pair of legs per segment. They occur in several colors and patterns but most common are brown and reddish orange. Adult centipedes hide in moist, dark and secluded areas during winter. They place eggs in dampened soil during summer or spring. As centipedes become adults, they grow a complete set of legs and extra segments. Most centipedes live for more than a year and some up to six years.
